Home Detox: Getting Started

About a year ago, in the midst of flu and cold season, it felt like my kids and I were sick every other week. I was completely exhausted and willing to try anything so I attended a wellness workshop in my community and it was truly eye opening. I've always been interested in nutrition and thought we were leading a pretty healthy life, but I had no idea that there were so many toxins hidden in everything from our water and air supply to household cleaning and skincare products.

I was eager to start changing everything, but the more I researched the more overwhelmed I felt. Not to mention, switching to natural alternatives and throwing away my current products was going to be costly and felt wasteful.

Where To Start

Clean Water. There are many options out there when it comes to water filters. We moved into a house that had an undersink Aquaversa by Multipure so we have continued to change out the filters every 6-12 months depending on our use and are very happy with the taste and quality of the water.

  • Multipure utilizes carbon block technology to filter out a broad range of common water contaminants including arsenic, bacteria & viruses, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and lead (just to name a few).

  • There is a lot of data available on Multipure's website about how carbon filtration works, what its systems filter our and real-life performance data.

  • I love the under-the-sink system because I can use it for everything from our drinking water to water for cooking and washing fruits/veggies.

Clean Air. After the wellness workshop the first thing I wanted to improve was our air quality. I did a lot of research on air purifiers and ended up going with the Alen brand (10% discount code linked). I wanted something that worked, but was also affordable. The AirDoctor was a close second, just a higher price point.

We have the BreatheSmart Flex in our bedrooms and the BreatheSmart 75i downstairs in our main living space.

  • We spend 7+ hours (more for kids) sleeping in our bedrooms so I thought that was the best place to start. More recently, I added the larger unit for our main living space. In the future, I plan to add a smaller unit to my home office where I spend a few hours a day.

  • The Alen purifiers ship quickly and are easy to setup and maintain. Our home air smells cleaner and my kids have also have had far less viruses/colds since adding these to our home. Overall, very happy with this brand and our purchases!

At Simply Nourished the goal is progress, not perfection. Do what you can to lessen your baseline level of toxins in your home, but it's okay if you don't change everything right away. It's important to keep it real and work within your budget. Lots more to come on detoxifying your home. Thanks for reading!
